FL Keys 4th of July Fishing Report
Many of our valued repeat clients visit the Florida Keys on holiday weekends to fish with Main Attraction Charters, and the 4th of July was no exception. We had two families in town this past 4 day weekend that booked multiple trips with us.
Gary and Nancy Mein were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary and had their extended family along for the ride. First off, congrats to them for 50 years together! They started off their week celebrating and taking their grandson, Cam, for a half day reef charter on one of our smaller vessels, Main Attraction 5. Captain Aaron put Cam on the snapper and caught some larger mackerel, which Cam was all about!
Later in the week, Gary and Nancy’s family had three offshore trips booked on the Main Attraction 2, with Captain Shelby and first mate, Dylan. The first offshore trip, the whole family got to reel in some nice gaffer and slammer Mahi. The Mein family were really looking forward to taking Mahi back home, so a rack full was an added bonus. Their last two offshore trips they caught more Mahi but really focused on Swordfishing. Over the last two trips, a small swordfish was caught, which we released, and a big “donkey” swordfish estimated at 200+ pounds was harvested. This family really knows how to celebrate 50 years of love! Our Main Attraction crew really enjoyed catching fish and laughing with the “Mein Attraction” crew!
Another client who fished multiple charters was Kim Cannedy and her nephew, Ryan, and good friend Ana. We met Kim March 2018, after we were all recovering from Hurricane Irma. Since her initial trip, she has fished with us well over 10 charters in a short amount of time. Kim stays at the Palm Villa House Rental in Key Colony Beach when she visits us, which makes her stay very convenient, being only 5 minutes from the boat dock.
We refer to her as a “die-hard” angler who really enjoys being on the water to relax! She is pretty much up for anything. The first offshore trip Kim, Ryan, and Ana caught a rack full of gaffer dolphin and a delicious Triple-tail. Their second trip consisted primarily of Swordfishing, as the Mahi fishing was very slow that day. They hooked a small swordfish, which they released, and as they were doing sword drifts, a big 25lb+ Bull dolphin popped up! Ana, Kim’s friend, actually spotted the Mahi first and alerted the crew who immediately threw a bait to him. Kim can now say she has caught a big bull Mahi and she is putting it on the wall with the help of Grey’s Taxidermy.
For the third and final trip, the crew was focused on landing a Swordfish and that is exactly what they did. They fished their way out, catching Mahi along the way, and once upon the Swordfish grounds, they did several drifts. Once they got tight, they knew they were fighting a beast. It was a joint effort and all anglers got a turn on their 225lb+ swordfish. Grey’s Taxidermy now has another trophy to replicate!
