First Sailfish Of The Season! – November Fishing Update
Earlier this month we published an article entitled: Ten Bluewater Slams in a Single Trip. This article told the story of William Cully and his family, who had an epic offshore trip, catching 10 Wahoo, 10 Tuna, and 11 Mahi in a single day. The day we published that article, William was already back at it with some friends aboard the Main One with Captain Marty Lewis at the helm again. In the article, we promised a follow-up to see what they caught that day; here is that article!
Williams’ second trip was up in the air because the weather had been blowing 20-30 mph daily that week, so we were unsure if they could even get out. Captain Marty checked in with William the night before and reiterated he would call him that morning if he thought it would be too much. So, Friday morning, Captain Marty met his mate at the marina well before daylight and went out to catch live bait. William and his friends Berk Ellis and Linda Caballero arrived at the marina promptly at 8am to start their fishing adventure.
After they boarded the “Main One,” Captain Marty gave them the rundown and explained it would be best to stay on the reef, seeing as it was so windy. He explained to the group that the rough water would make the water ‘dirty’ (cloudy) and make it harder for the Yellowtail Snapper to see the lines, likely leading to a good bite.
Captain Marty’s hunch was correct, and before they knew it, they had 25 tasty Yellowtail Snappers in the box!
When Marty checked in with William the night before, he explained that he expected it to be rough. William assured him he was up for the challenge and insisted there was no need to worry.
So when William proceeded to get seasick during the charter, Marty couldn’t resist giving him a hard time! Like a true fisherman, though, William persevered, battling the nausea to keep reeling in fish.
Having built a rapport with William over previous trips, Captain Marty knew his teasing would be taken in good spirits!
In addition to the Yellowtail Snapper, they also caught two nice-sized Kingfish. With winter just around the corner, we will start seeing a lot more Kingfish and other Mackerels like Cero and Spanish.
The Mutton Snappers were also hungry, which was terrific as the group successfully landed four of them on jigheads using live pilchards.
Captain Marty also flew a kite that day, but they didn’t get any action on it. However, they got bit on the flatline by a Sailfish! It was pretty exciting because the fish went ballistic on the hookup. It jumped many times and nearly spooled them! Fortunately, they were able to get control of the fish and, turn its head around and successfully caught and released it! So not only did they get themselves a bunch of delicious meat, but they caught the first official sailfish of the season while on anchor!
When they arrived back at the marina, they posed for photos and Captain Marty got to work, fileting their outstanding catch.
Later that evening, Main Attraction Co-Owner Katie Lewis met some girlfriends for dinner, and guess who she ran into, William and his friends! They had taken their Yellowtail and Mutton Snapper filets to Sparky’s Landing to have prepared for dinner. Katie went over to the bar and said a quick hello and thanked them for fishing with Main Attraction. They mentioned how great their fish was and how much fun they had on their trips. As a bonus, they would be driving back to Virginia with a cooler full of tasty fish!
