The Next Generation of a Florida Keys Fishing Family
Main Attraction has some BIG News! As many of our repeat clients know, Alex Lewis has grown up around the family business. If you have fished with us before, you probably have seen Alex at the Marina helping his father Captain Marty Lewis maintain the vessels, out catching bait, or fishing on a charter.
Immediately upon graduating from Marathon High School last year, Alex was determined to get his Captain’s license, just as his father had. He took the online course, passed, and had plenty of sea hours. With the help of bonus Mom Katie, they got the paperwork submitted to the Coast Guard, and we officially have another licensed captain in the family! Huge Congratulations to the new generation, Captain Alex Lewis.

Captain Alex with his newly acquired Captains License.
In addition to Alex obtaining his Captain’s license, he is also attending Florida Keys Community College for Marine Mechanics. At Main Attraction, we put a lot of value on our Captains having strong mechanical abilities for the longevity of our boats and, most importantly, the safety of our clients. In our eyes, A captain’s understanding of vessel maintenance and repair is of paramount importance.
Thanks to the incredible power of saltwater corrosion, it is inevitable for components on boats to break. A mechanically inclined captain can identify issues while out on the water and resolve them immediately. That is why we are sure to employ skilled Captains who can fix their vessels on the fly and save your trip! We also train all of our Captains to identify potential issues and resolve them during their mandatory daily safety inspections on all vessels before leaving the dock.

Captain Alex knows caring for his vessel gives him more time to fish and put together great catches for his clients.
Main Attraction has a long-standing tradition of training our crews well, equipping them with skills that have propelled them to successful captaincy careers for decades to come. A good number of Captains in Marathon first cut their teeth on a Main Attraction Boat!
In the coming months, Captain Alex will be filling in for his father here and there as the schedule sees fit, but he will primarily be running the 43′ Main Attraction. He is already putting together great catches for our customers. Come spring, he will be helping out with the evening tarpon trips on Reel Attraction as well!
So, let’s get to know our newest Captain! Alex will be 19 years old in a few weeks. A true native of the Florida Keys, his life revolves around the water. When he is not running charters, he is running his Contender or working on it, always finding something to fix or improve upon.
Even at a young age, Alex enjoyed tearing down old motors and trying to put them back together again. His love for the water extends to fishing, spearfishing, and bait catching, alongside leisurely boat rides with his sister and dog, Gauge, trips to the sandbar, and occasional four-wheeler adventures to River Ranch. River Ranch is a big piece of property in the middle of Florida that is muddy and has tons of trails to ride.

Ever since he was a child it was clear Alex had fishing in his blood!
Captain Alex is also part of the Main Attraction Sportfishing tournament team and has been for years. As the schedule expands, Captain Alex will be running his own boat in the tournaments. Most recently, his little sister asked if he would fish her in the Islamorada Kids Sailfish Tournament. Of course, he was happy to fish his sister and her buddies. After a long day on the water, he managed to guide his team to first place, and secured his first official win as a licensed Captain!
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Captain Alex constantly asks his father, Marty, for advice about fishing so he can learn from the decades of experience his father has. A lot of dinner conversations are now planning the next day’s trip. They discuss the forecasted weather conditions, how to capitalize on them, and plan where they should look for fish. That extra effort goes a long way when it comes to consistently producing fish for our clients.
Hard work and planning ahead allows Captain Alex to produce results for our customers.
We are confident Captain Alex will be a great Captain as he has a passion for producing results for his clients, and he wants to give each customer all his efforts. Growing up watching his father work long extended hours in the hot sun daily without complaining has taught him to have a similar work ethic.

Captain Alex is already putting putting smiles on our customers faces!
