Florida Keys Family Vacation Fishing Charters – July 2020 Report

Fishing is a great way to include the whole family and have some good wholesome fun! What is more beautiful than a sunny day out on the water breathing in the fresh sea air? At Main Attraction Charters we enjoy seeing young children discover their passion for fishing. It is very easy to get caught up in hunting for monster fish, breaking records, and winning tournaments. But all it takes is seeing a child catch their first fish, seeing their face beaming with joy and pride to remember why we do this in the first place!

In recent weeks we have had the pleasure of fishing with several families traveling with young kids. It was our privilege to meet them and to  have a part in these families making  lasting memories of a fun-filled Florida Keys vacation. On July 1st we had the Schuman family fish aboard the Main Attraction. They opted for a ½ day trip, as the kids were quite young and they were unsure how they would handle the ocean. Well, the two young brothers Rhett and Kelly had an absolute blast, each catching their first Mahi ever! After a fun 4-hour trip Captain Marty asked the boys if they wanted to drive the boat home (help steer the wheel) and you should have seen their eyes light up! Of course, they did, what little kid wouldn’t?

Once back at the dock, the boys were so proud to hold their catch and pose for photos. Within an hour of leaving, their mother, Hillary contacted us and booked another trip for two days later aboard the Main One.

On July 3rd, the Schuman family went back out, one of the brothers, Kelly returned, and this time brought his cousin Kira along to show her the ropes. Again, Captain Marty found some schoolie Mahi which was the perfect size for the kids to catch. Feeling more confident about the kids on the water, the Schuman’s chartered a ¾ day this time, allowing more time to get into the deeper waters and try something different. They rigged up an electric reel for deep drops and caught a delicious snowy grouper! We enjoyed our two trips with the Schuman family and hope to fish with them again soon.

On July 2nd, we had the pleasure to meet the Gol family. Jason brought several young boys to fish that Thursday and went on Main One with Captain Marty and first mate Christian. They were all able to catch their first Mahi offshore and the group of boys was beyond ecstatic. Some might say, “oh it’s just a schoolie Mahi” but to a newcomer especially a young one, it’s a big deal. Whether it is a small fish or a 50-pound bull dolphin, if someone is happy with their catch and it is within the legal regulations, we love being a part of that memory and are excited for them. And we will tell you a little secret about smaller sized Mahi, they taste even better than the big ones!

July 6th, Emilie Deal booked a ¾ to full-day combo, including reef and offshore. Considered essential workers, she and her husband have been working throughout the pandemic. They finally got a chance to enjoy a vacation with their two young kids Finley and Curtis (a.k.a. Bubs). This was going to be their first Mahi trip so Captain Steve and First Mate Christian felt a responsibility to make it a good experience for them. Captain Steve kept them on the fish and Christian was sure to keep the kids involved, teaching them with patience and care. The kids listened well and did a fantastic job catching their fish. They would get so excited every time the rod would bend that it made the trip fun for everyone. The siblings were so proud of their fish, smiling and posing with their catch as they took photos on the dock.
