Florida Keys Fishing Report – March 2022

It sure has been a windy winter in the Florida Keys! We have been experiencing winds from 15 mph to 30mph these past few weeks. Although we run larger boats which allows us to fish in a wider variety of conditions, not everyone enjoys the rocking motion caused by the taller waves. Having to shuffle and reschedule trips due to the weather is an unfortunate but necessary task when running a fishing charter in the Keys. Despite these weather-related challenges, the fishing has been consistently good, and we are excited for the official start of spring which is just [...]

A Florida Keys Winter Sailfish Story

On the morning of December 6th, Captain Marty Lewis and Mate Lance Doire pulled out of the Marina aboard the Main One on a mission. To help Vinny Yeager, age 66, fulfill a lifelong dream to catch a Sailfish. Vinny is no stranger to fishing; he spent most of his life fishing on the Long Island Sound and taking fishing vacations in Cape May. After moving to Florida in 2013 to retire, Vinny switched to fishing in the lakes and canals of his home in Melbourne, vacationing in the Florida Keys. But somehow, after all these years, [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – December 2020

December is off to a great start in the Florida Keys. There has been a wide variety of species caught amongst our vessels, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Cobia, Mackerel, Kingfish, Sailfish, Yellow Jacks, Wahoo, and various large Sharks. The Winter months typically bring more wind from a direction that is usually out of the North. Fortunately, the Islands help block that wind energy when we fish the Atlantic side, allowing us to fish pretty comfortably. You can expect on average a 2-4 foot chop on the ocean during these months. We have had several “cold fronts” [...]

Florida Keys Sailfish Season Kickoff 2020-2021

Florida Keys Sailfish Season Kickoff 2020/2021 As we approach the month of December, it should have every sport fisherman fired up, because it means Sailfish season is upon us. Every winter, we have many customers that request to catch a Sailfish and we hope to fulfill them all. Landing a Sailfish depends heavily on weather conditions, current, and the fish being there, but when it’s game on we love catching and releasing Sailfish just as much as our anglers do. Catching a Sailfish is a lasting lifetime memory especially if it is your first. Main Attraction [...]

Sailfish On The Reef! – Florida Keys Kite Fishing

Every year near the end of October, beginning of November, Team Main Attraction begins to transition the way we fish in the Florida Keys. This time of year, through the winter, we spend a lot of time on the reef, or within 10-15 miles offshore. As the baitfish push closer to shore, so do our frequently targeted species (Sailfish, Cobia, Kingfish, Mackerel, Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, etc.). On October 31st, Captain Marty and Katie Lewis had some family come into town to go trick-or-treating with their little one. Katie’s father Fred, has always enjoyed Yellowtail snapper fishing [...]

2020 Sailfish Season Recap and Wrap-up

2020 Sailfish Season Recap and Wrap-up What an odd few months it has been for all across America and throughout the world. The Florida Keys have been shut down since mid-March. As many know, from February through August, the Keys rely heavily on tourism to support their businesses for “season”. With tourists being banned, that means no income. However, the fish didn’t get the memo, and fishing has been incredible! Although we haven’t had clients to entertain, the Main Attraction crew has taken advantage of less fishing pressure, specifically sailfish, and have put up some record-setting numbers. There [...]

Florida Keys Sailfish Record 70 Sailfish Caught and Released in one day!

Florida Keys Sailfish Record - 70 Sailfish Caught and Released in one day! On Saturday, April 11th, first mate Digger Rodamer sent out a group text to the Main Attraction crew suggesting a Sailfish trip on Easter Sunday. Digger and Captain Marty Lewis saw each other earlier that day while fishing off the Marathon hump. Captain Marty had taken his wife, Katie, and young daughter tuna fishing. Based on the conditions they saw offshore both Marty and Digger had a feeling the sail fishing was about to be great. With it being a holiday and having [...]

Billfish Camp February 2020 Fishing Report

Billfish Camp February 2020 Fishing Report On February 7th and 8th, 2020, Main Attraction hosted their first 2-day Billfish Camp. We had six participants, some local and some traveled as far from North Carolina and Tennessee to join our camp. The forecast for Friday, February 7th was less than appealing, as a large front was making its way through Florida. Captain Marty spoke to all the anglers the night before and asked that they arrive at the dock at 7:30 am Friday so he could review the weather conditions and make the best judgment call. The morning started [...]

Islamorada Sailfish Tournament 2020 – Fish For Holly

Islamorada Sailfish Tournament 2020 - Fish For Holly Last Saturday, Main Attraction was entered into the 2nd Annual Fish for Holly Sailfish Tournament, based out of Islamorada. The crew consisted of Captain Marty Lewis at the helm of Main One, with the help of Captain Shelby and first mate Digger Rodamer working the pit. We had four registered anglers, an all-female team, consisting of Katie Lewis (Marty’s wife and business partner), Elise Mucha (Brutus Seafood owner), Alli Heller and Carlin Palumberi. The team left the dock at 4:30am to run up to Islamorada and catch [...]

The “Secret” to Successful Florida Keys Charter Fishing

The “Secret” to Successful Florida Keys Charter Fishing Many clients are envious of our Captains and Mates. They say things like, “you are so lucky you get to fish all year round!” They are not wrong, of course, our crew members love to fish. However, most people don’t get to see all of the work behind the scenes that is required to consistently produce fish for our clients. A successful charter fishing fleet entails so much more than fishing daily. While our past article The “Secret” to Winning Florida Keys Sailfish Tournaments focused on the preparation required for high [...]
