Florida Keys’ ‘Hell Week’ Fishing Report

The Snapper bite has been hot on the reef! In true Florida Keys style, we ended 2023 with a flurry of fishing trips. The day after Christmas every year marks the start of the busiest week of the year in the Florida Keys. It can get pretty hectic that week, so the locals commonly call it 'Hell Week!' Hotel occupancies this year were 90-100%, with many families looking to put a unique island twist to their Christmas festivities. During this week, we fished nonstop, with multiple trips per day. We fish a lot of [...]

Florida Keys Reef & Wreck – May 2023 Fishing Report – Birthday Edition

Katie and her friends celebrating her birthday. The summertime season is just around the corner, and soon we'll be running charters nonstop until the fall. Believe it or not, on our days off, we like to fish, which we call fun-fishing. While we love our jobs, the difference between charters and fun-fishing is that their is no pressure to produce fish. This lets us cut loose, have a beer, and be a little sillier than we might be with a client onboard. Every year on Cinco de Mayo, Main Attraction co-owner  Katie Lewis goes fun [...]

Florida Keys Holiday Season Fishing Report – December 2022

One of our busiest weeks of the year is right around the corner. Anglers from all over the country will come to the Florida keys during Christmas week, most to escape the snow and bitter cold. The temperature has cooled to a pleasant 75 degrees as the winds shift northerly. Sure, that's warm for Winter compared to most places, but for us, this is a welcome respite from the 90-100 degree summertime heat. We are starting to see Wahoo and Sailfish show up right on time! Our typical reef and wreck species are also in play now. As [...]

A Local Florida Keys Fish Story

Living in the Florida Keys gives you more than beautiful views and great fishing. You also get to develop small-town relationships with the locals, especially if you have lived here for many years. Captain Marty Lewis, now in his early 40s, has lived in the Keys since he was a teenager. Throughout the years, Marty has developed solid relationships with other locals, such as Ms. Donna Hart. Donna caught her first Sailfish many years ago with Captain Marty. Due to volunteering her time at local fishing tournaments, Ms. Hart is known by numerous fishing professionals and anglers. [...]

The “Secret” to Successful Deep Drop Fishing Trips in the Florida Keys

When our customers mention deep drop fishing or deep dropping, they are often referring to swordfishing. Although a Swordfish is an incredible trophy and great to eat, many other creatures of the deep are also fun to catch and delicious to eat. At Main Attraction, we consider fishing for any species in depths over 500 feet to be deep dropping. This will be the 6th installment of our "Secrets To Success" article series. We sat down with Captain Marty Lewis, who runs our 49' flagship, the Main One, and asked him about his deep dropping techniques. [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – May 2022

How is it May already? This year is flying by as summertime fishing is already right around the corner. May 1st is a special day for us in the Florida Keys because it's the opening day of the eight-month-long Grouper season! May 1st is nearly a holiday for many anglers, with the ultimate goal being to get their limit on the first day. Grouper Update Captain Alex and first mate Steve had a three-quarter day charter with Laura Kennedy and her friends on May 1st opening day of the season. They had a blast, catching four nice [...]

Springtime Wreck Fishing in the Florida Keys

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, no it's not Christmas, it's springtime in the Florida Keys!  Florida Keys springtime fishing offers a wide variety of species to be caught, along with an equally diverse set of fishing conditions. This time of year we aren’t typically fishing as far from land as we do later on in the year. When it comes to fishing in the Spring, less travel time means longer fishing time! While Yellowtail Snapper are delicious to eat and can still be found on the Reef in the springtime, many of our customers [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – End of 2020

Finally, 2020 has come to an end and we are thrilled! We just finished two very busy weeks here in the Florida Keys including Christmas week; the busiest week of the year. To be proactive before the nonstop week of fishing, we installed two brand new motors on one of our most popular vessels, the Main Attraction. Unfortunately, within two days of running them, one of our shiny new motors had a major internal failure and was found to be unrepairable. We worked very hard to rearrange trips on our four other vessels and get people on the [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – December 2020

December is off to a great start in the Florida Keys. There has been a wide variety of species caught amongst our vessels, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Cobia, Mackerel, Kingfish, Sailfish, Yellow Jacks, Wahoo, and various large Sharks. The Winter months typically bring more wind from a direction that is usually out of the North. Fortunately, the Islands help block that wind energy when we fish the Atlantic side, allowing us to fish pretty comfortably. You can expect on average a 2-4 foot chop on the ocean during these months. We have had several “cold fronts” [...]

Florida Keys Reopening – June 2020 Fishing Report

Florida Keys Reopening - June 2020 Fishing Report The Florida Keys officially reopened to public visitors on June 1, 2020. As the charters began to trickle in, we were thrilled to have some type of normalcy back in our lives. We were also fortunate enough to have our loyal clients who had trips booked during the pandemic, reschedule instead of cancel to help support our business during such a difficult time. We are happy to report we are back in action, fishing, and working hard! Dave Villiger and his son recently traveled from Atlanta, Georgia, to fish with [...]
