All About Wahoo – Florida Keys Wahoo Facts

If you are American, you call it Wahoo; Hawaiin, Ono; Japanese, Kamasu-sawara; or a marine biologist, Acanthocybium Solandri. No matter what you call it, this cousin of the Mackerel is an extraordinary fish. When a Florida Keys fishing Captain has a Wahoo pulled over the transom of their vessel, everyone gets excited. Wahoo is a treat, not an everyday catch, even for daily fishing Captains in the Florida Keys. You can only accomplish a Florida Blue Water Slam by catching a Wahoo! So we know we love catching Wahoos and eating them, but what else can we [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – End of 2020

Finally, 2020 has come to an end and we are thrilled! We just finished two very busy weeks here in the Florida Keys including Christmas week; the busiest week of the year. To be proactive before the nonstop week of fishing, we installed two brand new motors on one of our most popular vessels, the Main Attraction. Unfortunately, within two days of running them, one of our shiny new motors had a major internal failure and was found to be unrepairable. We worked very hard to rearrange trips on our four other vessels and get people on the [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – December 2020

December is off to a great start in the Florida Keys. There has been a wide variety of species caught amongst our vessels, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Cobia, Mackerel, Kingfish, Sailfish, Yellow Jacks, Wahoo, and various large Sharks. The Winter months typically bring more wind from a direction that is usually out of the North. Fortunately, the Islands help block that wind energy when we fish the Atlantic side, allowing us to fish pretty comfortably. You can expect on average a 2-4 foot chop on the ocean during these months. We have had several “cold fronts” [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – September, 2020 – Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo

Florida Keys Fishing Report - September, 2020 - Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo The Florida Keys are still pretty busy, which is a surprise. Typically, every year once the kids go back to school, the Keys will see fewer visitors, making it our off-season. This year, Main Attraction fished more charters in July and August then we did in 2019 and September is looking pretty busy too. Our guess is after the COVID restrictions were lifted, people were anxious to get out of the house and have a vacation that didn't require international travel. What is better than being in [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – January 2, 2020

Florida Keys Fishing Report - January 2, 2020 It has been a very busy week for us at Main Attraction. Our boats have been running double charters to accommodate everyone during one of the busiest times of the year. We had a huge weather front blow through on December 18th starting in the afternoon and lasting until Sunday evening December 22nd. We tried our hardest to get these charters out, but for the safety of our passengers and vessels, we had to cancel or reschedule most of those trips. Once the weather let up, we were back on [...]

The “Secret” to Successful Florida Keys Charter Fishing

The “Secret” to Successful Florida Keys Charter Fishing Many clients are envious of our Captains and Mates. They say things like, “you are so lucky you get to fish all year round!” They are not wrong, of course, our crew members love to fish. However, most people don’t get to see all of the work behind the scenes that is required to consistently produce fish for our clients. A successful charter fishing fleet entails so much more than fishing daily. While our past article The “Secret” to Winning Florida Keys Sailfish Tournaments focused on the preparation required for high [...]

Wintertime Wreck Fishing in the Florida Keys

As “winter” approaches in the Florida Keys and temperatures cool to a comfortable 75 degrees the fishing heats up big-time on the reef. The Florida reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. In addition to the living reef, the Florida Keys has a multitude of artificial reefs on the ocean floor created by sunken wrecks and debris. Beyond the living reef in the Keys, there is not much more natural structure on the ocean floor as it is mostly sand beds. To provide more housing and spawning opportunities for fish, Florida has [...]

Woohoo it’s Wahoo! Florida Keys Charter Fishing

Woohoo it's Wahoo! Florida Keys Charter Fishing When people think about Wahoo in the Florida Keys, they often think about high speed trolling or jigging under large floating debris miles offshore, typically while Dolphin Fishing in the late spring and summer. The wintertime, however, also presents some fantastic opportunities for anglers to land these highly prized, delicious, sushi-grade fish. With a recent cold front moving into the Florida Keys cooling our waters to less than 70 degrees our Crews knew this change would likely draw Wahoo closer to shore as their food [...]
