Sailfish On The Reef! – Florida Keys Kite Fishing

Every year near the end of October, beginning of November, Team Main Attraction begins to transition the way we fish in the Florida Keys. This time of year, through the winter, we spend a lot of time on the reef, or within 10-15 miles offshore. As the baitfish push closer to shore, so do our frequently targeted species (Sailfish, Cobia, Kingfish, Mackerel, Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, etc.). On October 31st, Captain Marty and Katie Lewis had some family come into town to go trick-or-treating with their little one. Katie’s father Fred, has always enjoyed Yellowtail snapper fishing [...]

Gator Hunting in Florida

Gator Hunting in Florida Since the Florida Keys were reopened June 1st it has been full speed ahead for the Main Attraction team. Seeing as the typically slow season hasn't been all that slow, Main Attraction owners Marty and Katie Lewis decided to take a weekend off to get away as a family and reset. Katie, who handles social media and marketing for Main Attraction Charters, found a business named G3 Outfitters in Okeechobee, FL that offers all kinds of guided hunts (alligator, turkey, deer, etc).  Katie thought an alligator hunt could be a fun and [...]

All About The Florida Keys Dolphinfish - Facts about  Mahi-Mahi This is the first installment of a series we plan to write about the many unique species of fish in the Florida Keys. Florida Keys Fishing Report – September, 2020 – Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo

Florida Keys Fishing Report - September, 2020 - Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo The Florida Keys are still pretty busy, which is a surprise. Typically, every year once the kids go back to school, the Keys will see fewer visitors, making it our off-season. This year, Main Attraction fished more charters in July and August then we did in 2019 and September is looking pretty busy too. Our guess is after the COVID restrictions were lifted, people were anxious to get out of the house and have a vacation that didn't require international travel. What is better than being in [...]

Preparing Your Boat For a Hurricane – Florida Keys 2020

Preparing Your Boat For a Hurricane - Florida Keys 2020 Florida Hurricane season 2020 officially began June 1st and lasts through November 30th. Every year we hope we are not in the path of a strong storm; however, being prepared and understanding how to prepare for a storm is an important part of Floridians' lives. A few days ago Hurricane Laura had appeared to be heading to the Florida Keys, that along with the presence of a Tropical Storm named Marco in the Gulf, caused us to begin some preliminary storm preparations. We took some photos of these [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – August 2020

Florida Keys Fishing Report - August 2020 August 2020 kicked off with some excitement last week. Captain Marty had some nice folks for a full day offshore. Ralph and his friends originally canceled their trip due to tropical storm Isisais and its potential impact on the Florida Keys. We all watched the weather for a few days and since the Keys didn’t even get a drop of rain, Ralph decided to go fishing. The plan was to go offshore and it was a good one! The team of guys caught Mahi (Dolphinfish) and Blackfin Tuna! But the most interesting [...]

Florida Keys Fishing Report – Mahi Season July 21

Florida Keys Fishing Report - Mahi Season July 21 For the last several weeks, the Florida Keys has experienced a lack of wind and very flat calm conditions on the water that we often refer to as a slick day or a slicker. This is typical in the Summertime but not normally for weeks on end without any change in the weather to offer some relief. The prolonged lack of wind and waves combined with the summer sun was not only making for hot days but also increased water temperatures. With weeks of no wind, the sargassum grass [...]

Florida Keys Marlin Fishing Report

Florida Keys Marlin Fishing Report Many people travel to the beautiful Florida Keys to book a fishing charter and some expect to come down here and catch Marlin. Perhaps it is the stories of Ernest Hemingway or the fact that our professional baseball team in Florida is named the Marlins, but the fact is we don't catch Marlin all that often here in the Florida Keys. We catch far more Mahi (Dolphinfish), Blackfin Tuna, Yellowtail Snapper, Sailfish, Grouper, Wahoo, and Swordfish to name a few. Marlin is typically caught more frequently in places like Australia, Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto [...]

Florida Keys Reopening – June 2020 Fishing Report

Florida Keys Reopening - June 2020 Fishing Report The Florida Keys officially reopened to public visitors on June 1, 2020. As the charters began to trickle in, we were thrilled to have some type of normalcy back in our lives. We were also fortunate enough to have our loyal clients who had trips booked during the pandemic, reschedule instead of cancel to help support our business during such a difficult time. We are happy to report we are back in action, fishing, and working hard! Dave Villiger and his son recently traveled from Atlanta, Georgia, to fish with [...]
